A Christian can have demonic problems:

Man is spirit, soul (will, mind, emotions) and body:

Heb 4:12 "For the Word of God is living and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing apart of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

1Th 5:23 "And may the God of peace Himself sanctify you, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blamelessly at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ."

(See also: spirit: Rom 8:16; 1 Pe 4:6; Jam 4:5; soul and spirit: Job 7:11; Isa 26:9; 42:1; soul and body: Isa 10:18; 51:23; Mic 6:7; Mat 10:28; body and spirit: Dan 7:15; 1 Cor 5:3; 6:20; 7:34; Jam 2:26).

If we are born again, our spirit has completely and perfectly been recreated and is being indwelled by His Spirit (2 Cor 5:17; Joh 3:5; Rom 8:9-11) and is in relationship with God (Rom 8:16). The devil cannot touch that. He can only influence our will, mind, emotions and bodies.

2 Cor 5:17 "So that if any one is in Christ, that one is a new creature; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."

Joh 3:5-6 "Jesus answered, Truly, truly, I say to you, Unless a man is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. (6) That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."

Rom 8:9-11 "But you are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone has not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His. (10) And if Christ is in you, indeed the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. (11) But if the Spirit of the One who raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the One who raised up Christ from the dead shall also make your mortal bodies alive by His Spirit who dwells in you."

Emotions                                 Mind

God created man with a free will (Rom 7:18). God wants a relationship with us because we have a free will. Otherwise He would have had a relationship with puppets. A relationship with God and other Christians is the reason for life and salvation (1 Jh 1:1-3). If our will is weak, we could not grow as a whole person in a relationship with Him. Our will is like a muscle. We must practice our will by biblical principles: renewing of mind, discipline, obedience, sound mind, self control (Rom 12:1,2; 13:14; Gal 5:22; 2 Tim 1:7; 2 Pe 1:6). If our will is weak, our emotions will rule or our mind will rule. We will be confused. Or; if our will is weak, the devil may control our minds or emotions. Our will must be strengthened, enabled and ruled by the Spirit (Phi 2:13). Our will must rule over our emotions and mind.

Rom 12:1-2 "I beseech you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, pleasing to God, which is your reasonable service. (2) And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, in order to prove by you what is that good and pleasing and perfect will of God."

Rom 13:14 "But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not take thought beforehand for the lusts of the flesh."

2 Pet 1:6 "and with knowledge self-control, and with self-control, patience, and with patience, godliness,"

If our will is weak it might become difficult to develop self-discipline. A weakened will may result in finding it difficult to resist temptations. That may give rise to bad habits. Bad habits may give rise to possible demonic oppression / possession.

In our society it had become more challenging to hold onto a Biblical, Christian world-view and the truth of His Word in the midst of mainstream naturalism and secular humanism. Peer pressure has become enormous. We see that especially in the ethos of the youth, being so brainwashed by the main stream science and media. No one wants to be out with the crowd / main stream. All these may lead to a reluctance to stand up for the truth and contribute to a weakened will.

Possible fruits of oppression:

Steps towards demonic activity - away from God:

Pride ® deception ® unbelief ® disobedience ® guilt ® fear

Pride: Not submitting under God's authority (related to stubbornness, rebellion).

Jam 4:6-7 "But He gives more grace. Therefore He says, God resists the proud, but He gives grace to the humble. (7) Therefore submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

Deception: God's authority and the truth is brought under question (believing lies, false teachings, deviation from the truth of God's Word).

Gen 3:1 "Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which Jehovah God had made. And he said to the woman, Is it so that God has said, You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?"

Unbelief: Actively mistrusting God.

Mat 13:58 "And He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief."

Disobedience: Actively rebelling against God (His Word / Truth), yielding to the desires of the flesh.

Eph 5:5-7 "For you know this, that no fornicator, or unclean person, or covetous one (who is an idolater), has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. (6) Let no man deceive you with vain words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the children of disobedience. (7) Therefore do not be partakers with them."

Eph 2:1-3 "And He has made you alive, who were once dead in trespasses and sins, (2) in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience; (3) among whom we also had our way of life in times past, in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the thoughts, and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others."

Guilt: not to be confused with conviction. Anticipates punishment and tries to hide wrongdoing or denies wrongdoing: lies, self-righteousness.

Fear: alienated from God's loving protection: open door for demonic oppression (or possession in the case of non-Christians).

1 Joh 4:18 "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear, because fear has torment. He who fears has not been perfected in love."

Examples of Christians having demonic problems

Act 10:38 "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him." The Greek word is "katadunasteuô": literally being "under the power / might of."

Luk 13:11-12 "And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and she was bowed together and was not able to be completely erect. (12) And when Jesus saw her, He called and said to her, Woman, you are delivered from your infirmity."

Luk 13:16 "And ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham whom Satan has bound, lo these eighteen years, be loosened from this bond on the Sabbath day?"

Mar 16:9 "And when Jesus had risen early the first day of the Sabbath, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons."

A born-again person cannot be possessed by demons, but they can be oppressed, however, the manifestation of both is the same.

Steps towards God – away from demonic activity

Openness and humility® truth ® faith ® obedience ® peace

Openness and humility: submission to God / teachable spirit.

Jam 4:6-7 "But He gives more grace. Therefore He says, God resists the proud, but He gives grace to the humble. (7) Therefore submit yourselves to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."

Truth: Acknowledging God's authority, His Word and Character.

Joh 8:32 "And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

Faith: Actively trusting God and taking God up on His promises – related to humility: not to trust in yourself and your own ability, but to trust and be completely dependent on God.

Heb 11:1 "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

Obedience: Actively walking in truth and living God's Word: bearing fruit.

Col 1:9-12 "For this cause we also, since the day we heard, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that you might be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding, (10) that you might walk worthy of the Lord to all pleasing, being fruitful in every work and increasing in the knowledge of God, (11) being empowered with all power, according to the might of His glory, to all patience and long-suffering with joyfulness, (12) giving thanks to the Father, who has made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light."

Peace: being completely submitted under Gods love, care and protection. To know and accept that God is in control. It comes by having an open and mutual relationship with God, characterised by prayer and supplication.

Phi 4:6-7 "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. (7) And the peace of God which passes all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus."
